Healthy (or Crazy) Choice? Juan Manuel Marquez's Vitamin Beverage

If you weren’t watching Mayweather/Marquez 24/7 on HBO this past Saturday night, we’re sure you’ve heard by now about Juan Manuel Marquez drinking a glass of his own urine after a training session.

Athletes downing strange beverages is certainly nothing new. The great Sugar Ray Robinson used to regularly drink tall glasses of beef blood, and told a shocked Jake LaMotta before their famous final meeting that the drink was his "secret weapon." Blood, I can somewhat understand... but urine!?

Having downed the contents for the 24 /7 cameras – there looked to be about a shot’s worth in the glass - Marquez explained his curious activities.

“I think that this has helped me. I’ve done it for the last 5 or 6 fights with good results. I also drink my urine because that’s where a lot of proteins and vitamins are, part of your vitamin intake… and why not drink them again instead of wasting them?”

Why not?

Admittedly, I'm no expert when it comes to matters of this nature, and rather than just speculate on the various horrors of drinking one's own urine, I asked Tro Kalayjian of ThreeBrothersHealth.com for his more informed opinion.

"Drinking your own urine can pose some problems. If the source of the urine has a urinary tract infection, then you would be gulping down bacteria. If the urine is highly concentrated because of dehydration, the urine can become toxic. In wilderness survival, drinking urine is not recommended past 2 or 3 times, because each pass through the kidney increases the toxicity.

All in all, Juan Manuel Marquez's action is obscure, but pretty harmless. He is a well fed, well hydrated athlete. This means that his urine is dilute, and may not adversely affect him. As far as being a good source of "protein and vitamins", we recommend Centrum and Whey!”

That doesn’t sound too bad.

The masterful Mexican likely isn’t doing anything particularly risky, but for the same benefits, he could easily be going with store bought vitamin supplements. Although that wouldn’t be sending the same I’ll do anything to win message to Floyd Mayweather Jr, and perhaps that’s the whole point of Juan’s vitamin elixir.

For as Sugar Ray explained in his autobiography, "I wanted to create a doubt in his (Jake's) mind that he wasn't training as hard as I was."

Drinking your own or someone else's urine can be very unhealthy and risky. Urine tends to be acidic, and can carry bacteria or toxins since it is a waste product that the body discards. While some people may enjoy sexual activity that includes the use of urine, it is not a good idea to ingest waste products. While STDs are not often transmitted in the urine, it is possible for some to be present. Sharing body fluids is a dangerous practice, and should be avoided whenever possible.
There is very little information regarding how urine ingestion will effect the esophagus, digestive tract and teeth.

If JMM drinks his own urine why not his poop when in fact it has more proteins than the urine?

the guide to urotherapy

* Urine is 95 per cent water, but it also contains small quantities of nutrients including calcium, folic acid, iron, magnesium and zinc.

* The actress Sarah Miles is an aficionado of drinking her own urine, while the author JD Salinger was also a fan.

* Self-urine therapy dates back 5,000 years to ancient India, where it was known as "shivambu shastra" and seen as a way of rejuvenating body and soul.

* Advocates claim it has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anticancer properties.

* Research in the 1990s claimed that drinking urine could cure jet lag.

* It is highly sterile. The Aztecs used it to prevent wounds becoming infected.

* The practice is particularly popular in China, where millions of people drink a daily dose of their own urine.

* Some fans believe the Bible recommends urine therapy. A verse in Proverbs advises: "Drink waters from thy own cistern, flowing water from thy own well."

I recommend against drinking of urine. If concentrated, it can be toxic.

It's neither a good source of protein or vitamins like the boxer suggests.

PS: thanks for the shout-out

In my country, urine is used to cure sore eyes by putting small drops on both eyes. It's really effective coz I've done it already....But drinking it, for me it's unhealthy.
My message to those who called themselves health professionals to collect also their sweats and drink it. Maybe they can also find vitamins in there......

I say it's a crazy thing to do. I wouldn't drink either blood or my own urine. I can't see this helping win fights. I'd rather train hard by running, lifting weights and sparring forget the blood and urine yuck!
