The Boxing Bulletin Pick'em Game - October Week 1

With the first weekend of October coming up, it's time to start a new Boxing Bulletin's Pick'em game. Point totals are reset at the beginning of the month, so join right in if you haven't played yet because everyone's starting from scratch again.

Our game is a combination of picking the winners straight-up and beating the odds. If you're ready to match your prognostication skills against other boxing fans, then let's get started...

Beat The Odds

This is where it gets a little more involved, as you will be risking points to gain points. You will also have the option of choosing 1 fight to risk double points and 1 fight to risk triple points (you cannot choose the same fight to risk double and triple fights on).

Standings

We will keep standings for the full year, although each game will only last for 1 month. At the end of the month standings will be reset and a new game will begin.

September 25

Matthew Macklin vs Amin Asikainen - 12 rounds - Vacant European middleweight title - Velodrome, Manchester, Lancashire, United Kingdom (Sky)

Originally scheduled to face Darren Barker for the British title, Macklin jumped at the chance when the European title opportunity came his way. He'll be heading in as the prohibitive favorite over Asikainen, as the former European champ has been stopped twice in the past two years.

Jean Pascal vs Silvio Branco - 12 rounds - WBC light-heavyweight title - Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada (GoFightLive.tv)

Due to a series of cancellations, the 43 year old Branco missed out on a shot at former title holder Adrian Diaconu, but now gets his chance against Pascal. The speedy Pascal looked very sharp in toppling the aforementioned Diaconu and most expect the Italian to pose few difficulties for the hometown fighter.

September 26

Bernard Dunne vs Poonsawat Kratingdaengym - 12 rounds - WBA super-bantamweight title - The O2, Dublin, Ireland (RTE.ie)

After stopping Ricardo Cordoba in a FOTY candidate, Dunne's jumping right back into the fire against the tough Poonsawat. Given the styles of the two fighters, this could be another classic for Irish fans.

Vitali Klitschko vs Cris Arreola - 12 rounds - WBC heavyweight title - Staples Center, Los Angels, California, United States (HBO)

The big question is will Arreola show up in the type of shape needed to give Vitali a real go? If he does, this could be the big Ukranian's toughest fight since his loss to Lennox Lewis over 6 years ago.

David Diaz vs Jesus Chavez - 10 rounds - lightweight - UIC Pavilion, Chicago, Illinois, United States (GoFightLive.tv)

Both of these all action lightweights are coming off tough outings. Diaz was crushed by Manny Pacquiao last year, while Chavez took his lumps against Michael Katsidis back in April. Does either man have much left? We'll find out on Saturday in what should be a real battle.

The Dominican born New York based fighter is coming off a spectacular KO win over Dionisio Miranda, but looked lost against an ancient Raul Marquez in his only other bout against decent opposition. MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada (Television: HBO PPV) Floyd Mayweather (39-0) vs Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1) - 12 rounds Chris John (42-0-2) vs Rocky Juarez (28-4-1) - 12 rounds - WBA super-featherweight title Michael Katsidis (25-2) vs Vicente Escobedo (21-1) - 12 rounds - interim WBO lightweight title While Floyd will enter as a solid favorite, our editor Lee Payton believes Marquez has a real shot. The John/Juarez rematch was originally supposed to happen on June 27, only for John to pull out a week before the scheduled date with an illness. The Indonesian junior-featherweight has had health issues in the past, so let's hope he's 100% and ready to go this time. September 12 Mikkel Kessler (41-1) vs Gusmyr Perdomo (16-2) - 12 rounds - WBA super-middleweight title - Herning, Denmark & Andre Ward (19-0) vs Shelby Pudwill (22-3-1) - 10 rounds - Temecula, California, USA (Television, Showtime) With all due respect to Shelby Pudwill, he doesn't belong in the same ring as Andre Ward. Granted Ward needed a stay busy fight while Kessler fulfills his mandatory obligations against Perdomo, but Showtime might as well flash "Super Six Informerical" on the screen for as long as this extremely poor excuse for a main-event lasts. We're only offering it as an over/under, the the total has been set very low. Ivan Calderon (32-0-1) vs Rodel Mayol (25-3-1) - 12 rounds - WBO light-flyweight title Calderon has been one of the best in the sport for many years, but has has shown signs of slipping and was given a tough go by Mayol in their abbreviated draw back in June. On home soil, the masterful southpaw is the definitive favorite to take the rematch, but considering the odds, Mayol might be worth a pick. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (39-0-1) vs Jason LeHoullier (29-1-1) - 10 rounds - Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico (Television, Top Rank PPV) Is LeHoullier good enough to pull the upset? This Week's Line-up - clicking on the fighter's name will open up their boxrec page September 4 John Simpson vs Paul Truscott - Commonwealth featherweight title - Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, United Kingdom (Television: Sky, UK) These two featherweights fought back in January, with Simpson coming away with an 8th round "stoppage" win. It went in the books as a TKO, but it was an accidental clash of heads that lead to the bout being called (the correct ruling under British rules). Simpson was coming on strong at the time, and enters Friday's rematch as the favorite. Jose Lopez vs Marvin Sonsona - WBO super-flyweight title - Rama, Ontario, Canada (Television, TSN, Canada) This will be a huge jump in class for the 19 year old Sonsona who's fought a grand total of 38 professional rounds. Is he ready for it? Here's the Filipino phenom's one punch knock-out win over Wandee Singwnacha this past May. The 37 year old Lopez is 15-0-1 since dropping a 12 round decision to Fernando Montiel back in 2001. September 5 John O'Donnell (21-1-0) vs Tom Glover (9-5-3) - 12 rounds - Commonwealth welterweight title & Lee Purdy (11-1) vs Peter McDonagh (14-14) - 10 rounds - Watford, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom (Television: ITV4, UK) O'Donnell enters the main event as a big favorite, but Glover has put together an unlikely string of upsets, including a win over former European lightweight champion Jon Thaxton last time out. Purdy's only defeat as a pro... a 10 round points loss to McDonagh last December. Luis Concepcion vs Omar Solado (12 rounds) - interim WBA flyweight title - Panama City, Panama Solado was stopped last year in a WBC eliminator by Julio Cesar Miranda. After a couple of wins, he's getting another crack at a strap but will have to travel to Concepcion's hometown for the opportunity. Concepcion's lone defeat game in his 4th pro fight and since then has rolled off 18 straight victories.
